George DeVries, 58, passed away Nov. 6, 2014. He was born to George E. and Mary Lura (Gallager) DeVries Sr. in El Paso, Texas, on May 7, 1956.
He was a kind soul who touched the lives of those who knew him.
The middle child of two siblings, he grew up a military brat, moving from place to place before finally settling in Austin. He graduated from Travis High School in Austin in 1975. This is where he met his wife of 34 years, Cindy Lou Roberts.
After a lengthy courtship, they were married on Sept. 8, 1980, and a year later, their son, George Ellis DeVries III, was born.
In 1986, George and his family moved from Austin to Kingsland, Texas, where he resided until his death.
“Big George” was a caregiver who did his best to provide for his family despite his handicaps. He was well known throughout the community to always be in positive spirits and would often be seen walking the streets of Kingsland taking care of his business by stopping place to place.
At home, he spent the majority of his time providing for his wife. They were each other’s rock and found nothing but enjoyment with one another. When he wasn’t doing that, he was in front of the television cheering on his beloved Texas Longhorns and Dallas Cowboys. Football truly was his life, and he knew it well. During the offseason, he spent his time watching other sports, relaxing in “his spot” doing his puzzle books, cooking and listening to good old country music.
He was a simple man who led a simple life, a good man who had a good life. He loved, and he was loved. He will always be missed and will remain forever in our hearts.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Cindy Lou DeVries of Kingsland; son, George Ellis DeVries III of Kingsland; younger sister, Cindy Bishop of Whitehouse; and numerous nieces and nephews across the state.
George was preceded in death by his parents and older sister, Sharon Spates.
A memorial service is 2 p.m. Nov. 14 at Putnam Funeral Home, 145 Texas Ave. in Kingsland, (325) 388-0008, with Brother George Hogwood officiating.
