Vernon Leroy Sodomek passed away Dec. 28, 2014, at 93 of natural causes. He was a resident of a nursing home in Burnet, Texas, and a former resident of Omaha, Nebraska; Phoenix and Sun Lakes, Arizona; and Kingsland, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Rachel Amidon. He is survived by his two daughters, Linda Pate of Tucson, Arizona, and Susan Cozad of Kingsland, Texas; grandchildren, Jennifer Pate, John Cozad II and Jean Cozad Poteet; and five great-grandchildren.

Vern was the only child of Edward and Anna Sodomek of Omaha, Nebraska. He and Rachel married in Omaha during his service in the Army during World War II. He was stationed in Indian Springs, Nevada, which is now known as Area 51.

Vern joined Beehive Masonic Lodge in Omaha as a young man, and, just prior to his death, he received his 60-year Masonic pin. He was the last surviving charter member of Centennial AF & AM Masonic Lodge #326 in Omaha. After retirement, Vern and Rachel were active in the Sun Lakes, Arizona, Lions Club for many years. He moved to Kingsland after Rachel passed away.

A memorial service is 12:15 p.m. Feb. 15 at Highland Lakes United Methodist Church, located on RR 1431 near Texas 29 in Buchanan Dam, Texas. The Rev. Grady Roe will officiate. The Highland Lakes Military Honor Guard and the Kingsland AF & AM Masonic Lodge#1424 will also participate in the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be made to the American Heart Association, in Austin, Texas, or the Fisher House Foundation, an organization that provides military families housing close to a loved one during hospitalization.
