Anna Gertrude Morgan of Horseshoe Bay, Texas, passed peacefully from this life on Nov. 9, 2014, in the company of her family. She was born in Sylvania Township, Pennsylvania, on Oct. 7, 1927, to Amsey and Mabel (Glover) VanVolkinburg.
After growing up in the areas of Austin and Port Allegheny in Pennsylvania, Anna’s family moved to Niagara Falls, New York. She graduated from Trott High School in Niagara Falls. She met and married her husband, William J. Morgan Jr., in Niagara Falls, where together they owned a service station. In 1965, the couple and their five children relocated to Southern California.
In the early 1970s, they moved to Durango, Colorado, where Anna worked as a cashier and a bookkeeper for City Market for many years.
Anna and Bill opened a store in Aztec, New Mexico, in the early 1980s, and they enjoyed a long career of store ownership in Aztec.
The two of them moved to the Texas Hill Country to retire among the bluebonnets and wildflowers.
Anna had a lifelong passion for reading and could always be found with a book within arm’s reach. Her favorite places to go were the public library and the bookstores in town, where she could browse for something new to read. Mom’s joke always was that she moved whenever she read all the books at the town library, so she needed a new town! When she wasn’t reading, she was busy with crochet work or doing something with her grandchildren.
The legacy Anna leaves behind is of strength, showing us that we can be strong through long days and nights, to bend and not break, and remain true to ourselves. It is one of courage, showing us that we should face our challenges without turning away, to look headlong into the wind without fear, to keep the light shining and not let darkness prevail.
It is a legacy of grace, showing us the way to move tenderly through troubling times, to softly wrap one’s arms around others and help them come along with you, and to quietly come to acceptance with peace.
It is a legacy of love, teaching us that even in the hardest of times, love carries us through to the next place, love is found in every person, love is found in the poorest and darkest of places, the most unexpected times, and when you need it most and deserve it the least. This remarkable woman shall be forever in our hearts, and will be forever missed.
Anna was predeceased by her son, Jeffrey David Morgan; sister June VanVolkinburg Martin; brother, Charles VanVolkinburg; and grandson Devin Connor.
Anna is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, William J. Morgan Jr. of Horseshoe Bay; sister, Mabel Seger of Niagara Falls, New York; and brother, Edward VanVolkinburg of Henderson, Nevada. She is also survived by four children: daughter Subonna Morgan MacKenzie of Durango, Colorado; son William A. Morgan and wife Charmain of Horseshoe Bay; daughter Annie Rowland and husband Dave of Marble Falls; and Robert Morgan and wife Barbara of Durango, Colorado; as well as her daughter-in-law Jeanne Cable.
She is also survived by her 12 grandchildren who meant the world to her. She always told each one they were her favorite, and each one was: Amy Romero, Missy MacKenzie, Josie Connor, Callie Waddell, William F. Morgan, Christopher Morgan, Michael Morgan, Tamara Halterman, Jennifer Rowland-Rauso, Grace Rowland-Parker, Crystal Pennington, Caitlin Morgan LePlatt.
Anna also is survived by 18 favorite great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren, who are all her favorite, too.
The family thanks everyone at Granite Mesa Health Center for their loving and tender care, Texas Home Health and Hospice for the long hours and loving care, and to the Marble Falls branch of Texas Oncology, especially Dr. Thomas Aung, for everything over the last five years.
