Theron Edgar Brooks III, M.D., 76, passed away peacefully at his home in Marble Falls, Texas, on Dec. 31, 2014.
Born May 20, 1938, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Theron Edgar Brooks Jr. and Georgie Fay Brooks, Theron graduated from Paschal High School in 1956 and Texas Christian University in 1959. He attended and graduated from Southwestern Medical School in Dallas in 1963, during which time he met and married the former Joan Coral Reinsch at Broadway Baptist Church in Fort Worth on July 7, 1962. They have three children.
After completing a pediatric internship and residency at Children’s Hospital in Dallas in 1966, Theron served in the Air Force as a physician at Fairchild AFB in Spokane, Washington. In 1968, the family moved to Arlington, Texas, where Theron established a private pediatric practice until he and Joan retired in 1997 and moved to Horseshoe Bay and later Marble Falls for their retirement years.
Theron’s life was devoted to service, not only to his wife, Joan, and his three children, but also to the greater Arlington and Marble Falls communities. Throughout his life, Theron was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Arlington and First United Methodist Church in Marble Falls. During his time in Arlington, Theron served as chairman of the Arlington Human Services Project from 1985-87, presiding over the establishment of Arlington’s first pediatric clinic for indigent children. He was an Arlington city councilman from 1989-93 and served on the board of directors of the Arlington Sports Facilities Development Authority from 1991-97.
In Marble Falls, Theron was active in the Highland Lakes Habitat for Humanity, for which he served as past president. Theron was named Arlington Boys’ Club Citizen of the Year in 1986, Rotarian of the Year in 1987, Chamber of Commerce Member of the Year in 1989 and Arlington Medical Society Physician of the Year in 1990. He was a member and past member of Tarrant County Medical Society, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Rotary Club of Arlington and the Rotary Club of Marble Falls.
In addition to the thousands of lives he touched, Theron leaves his beloved wife, Joan; daughter, Karen and son-in-law Scott White; son Evan and daughter-in-law Shannon; son Stuart; and four grandchildren, Annabel and Caroline White and Wyatt and Georgia Brooks. Theron also leaves a sister, Jacqueline, and her husband, Seth Moore of Stephenville.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside and memorial services are open to the public. A graveside service is 2 p.m. Jan. 5 at Greenwood Cemetery in Fort Worth. A memorial service is 2 p.m. Jan. 6 at First United Methodist Church in Marble Falls.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial gifts in Dr. Brooks’ memory be made to their church in Marble Falls or the Myositis Association (www.myositis.org).
