Saundra Lou “Shorty” Garrett, 71, of Buchanan Dam passed away Jan. 11, 2015. She was born June 27, 1943, in Lampasas to Leo T. and Eula Mae (Morton) Robbins.
Shorty grew up in Sterling City and later Burnet, where she attended school and loved playing basketball. She graduated Burnet High School in 1961 and soon began her medical profession as an X-ray technician at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin.
In about 1977, she moved back to the Buchanan Dam and Burnet areas, where she worked for many years at different doctors’ offices and medical clinics.
Shorty never really retired but, in 2011, semi-retired to take more time being a caregiver to some close friends.
Shorty loved life, her family, friends and Joe Namath.
Survivors include her son, Jay “Trey” Garrett and wife Sandy of Belton; six grandchildren, Kelli, Will, Cameron, Hunter, Chandler and Gunner; and two great-grandchildren, Berklee and Tristan. Shorty is also survived by brother Bill Ellis and wife Cookie of Mineral Wells; sister Bonnie Gomez of Killeen; and cousins, nieces, nephews and many, many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Sam, Leo Robbins Jr. and Ronnie Ellis.
A visitation for family and friends is 5-7 p.m. Jan. 13 at Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home, 306 Texas 29 East in Burnet, (512) 756-2222. A funeral service is 1 p.m. Jan. 14 at the funeral home with Darrell Debo officiating. Interment will follow at Hillsdale Cemetery near Izoro in Lampasas County.
