Robert D. Goodwin, 79, of Marble Falls died Jan. 19, 2015

A service for Robert D. “Bob” Goodwin, 79, Marble Falls was Jan. 22 at First United Methodist Church in Marble Falls with the Revs. Ellen Ely and Jon Weems officiating. Interment was Jan. 23 in Fairview Cemetery in Bastrop.

Bob died Jan. 19, 2015, at his residence. He was born July 6, 1935, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

He married Paka Deloris Newby on July 30, 1955, in Merkel.

Bob was a graduate of Sul Ross State University, where he played football. For several years, he coached high school football and basketball. In 1960, he attended and graduated from the Dallas Institute of Funeral Services. He served his apprenticeship with Starbuck Funeral Home in Merkel.

Bob and Paka owned and operated Goodwin Funeral Home in Sinton from 1963 until 1977. In 1978, they moved to Gladewater, where they owned and operated Goodwin Funeral Home until their retirement in 1997.

Bob was very active in community service, having served as an officer in the Lions Club, the Rotary Club, and the chambers of commerce in Sinton and Gladewater. He was named Gladewater Citizen of the Year in 1995.

He was very active in the Texas Funeral Directors Association. He had served on all of the boards and was president of the association in 1974. He served as a governor to the National Funeral Directors Association, representing five states including Texas, from 1980 until 1984. He received his 50-year service pin from the Texas Funeral Directors Association in 2013.

Bob and Paka moved to Marble Falls in 2002. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and sang in the choir. He was a member of the Noonday Lions Club in Marble Falls. He loved to preform with the Hill Country Blenders, an a cappella harmony group.

He was preceded in death by two infant children; parents, Fern Hollis “Bud” and Dorothy Faulkerson Goodwin; and daughter, Diona Lynn Goodwin.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Paka Goodwin of Marble Falls; son and daughter-in-law, Newby Grant and Jenea Goodwin of Austin; grandsons, Robert Maxwell “Max” Goodwin and Martin Jacob “Jake” Goodwin; and granddaughter, Nona Greer Goodwin, all of Austin; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Gene Cottle of Troup and Pam Newby of Austin; nieces Cassandra Barnes, Celeste Cartwright, Candace James, Catherine Wallum and Alex Newby; and an adopted brother, Eddie James of Conroe.
